And here is another perfect pop moment from the new Alphabeat record The Spell.
Ten things you should know about this song:
1. It’s called Chess.
2. It has nothing to do with the musical by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson.
3. It’s about wanting to stop playing chess with somebody. Metaphorically. But still.
4. It’s an ongoing dialogue between Anders and Stine. Anders is the boy, and Stine is the girl.
5. It uses a handful of fantastic play on words regarding chess moves. “I’m checking you out”, “I’m moving the Queen”… blah blah blah, yes yes yes!!!
6. It has a mildly rompy (but rompy enough) chorus that’s comprised of the lyrics “I can’t do this anymore, come on baby let’s quit playing chess”.
7. There is an incredible vocoder bit directly after each chorus in which Stine’s vocals are all fantastified.
8. The breakdown right before the last chorus has some epic reharms going on.
9. It needs to be single. If it isn’t, I may cry.
10. Did I mention it’s called Chess?
